installation problem

Hi,
I have installed SMF 2.0 and it seems to be working fine, I want to install Adk portal 2.0 but I get an error

You cannot download or install new packages because the Packages directory or one of the files in it are not writable!

I have changed the permissions I have even changed the permissions on the whole httpdocs folder (I know it will cause big security problems but I am struggling)

The admin error log says

my domain is setup to use httpdocs as the landing directory I am not convinced the is a need for /var or /vhosts so basically I think the problem is with the path name, I assume this is setup in SMF or maybe not ! does anyone know how I can sort this.

I may have sorted it myself, I could not alter the server paths in the GUI but I have changed them in the settings file (they still show up wrong in the GUI). As I have messed around with file permissions  on the whole of my site I am going to delete it and start again. I will post my results

I have reinstalled, changed the settings file manually and still getting the same problem.
